Construction of Green Mill Village Underway in Arcola (Ill.)
Kickoff event entails planting garden plots with the help of local volunteers.

Arcola, Ill. – Local service organizations have volunteered to take part in the first of many community events at the site of Green Mill Village (GMV). Green Mill Village is a new sustainable resort under construction in Arcola, Ill. that is scheduled for completion in 2010.

Members of the Moultrie-Douglas County Extension Master Gardener and Junior Master Gardener Programs, Arcola Daisy and Brownies from Troop 2400 and Douglas County Brownie, Cadette and Daisy Scouts will be planting garden plots at the site.

Kaizad Irani, landscape architect and faculty member at Parkland College in Champaign, Ill., has prepared plans for the groups to follow and will be assisting with the plantings in select areas Saturday, October 11 from 10 a.m. to noon. Irani has chosen a variety of plants suitable for Central Illinois’ climate and available locally at Prairie Gardens in Champaign.

“We are excited to provide this learning opportunity to these groups from our local communities,” said Cassie J. Yoder, Green Mill Village Marketing Director. “These garden plots signify just the beginning of what is to come for Green Mill Village.”

Yoder said additional information is available about GMV and the event at www.greenmillvillage.com if other organizations would like to be involved with the resort development.

The garden plots are located near the berms that separate the Arcola Township Cemetery from Green Mill Village. With construction of roads and sewer lines already underway, these first gardens will add a touch of color throughout the building process.

Once complete, Green Mill Village will include a lodge and conference center, spa, restaurants, retail center and adventure center. Wind turbines and solar power will be used to generate power for the village. But Yoder said, “There’s much more to GMV than a “green” hotel. More details will be announced at our Groundbreaking Ceremony on October 30th.”

About Green Mill Village
Green Mill Village (GMV) is scheduled to open in 2010 and will include a lodge/conference center, spa, restaurants, retail center and adventure center – powered by wind turbines and solar power. It is an unprecedented Midwestern sustainable project, from both an environmental and an economic standpoint.

Located in the heart of Illinois Amish country, the Green Mill Village site is in the center of a triangle formed by the three major cities of St. Louis, Indianapolis and Chicago, and just over two hours from each. The conference center, lodge and spa facility will be designed with a 1940s era theme, reminding visitors of a simpler time with a slower pace. The conference center will accommodate meetings for 500 people with a staff trained to support "green" meetings.

Green Mill Village will emphasize key elements of responsible tourism, which include not only environmental considerations but also respect and appreciation for different cultures and ensuring that the local people benefit economically from tourism activities.
